  • Welcome to my blog!

Hi! I'm Traci. I'm a Registered Nurse who loves quilting, knitting, cross stitch, and the great outdoors. In my pre-scrubs life, I owned Real Photography, and you can still see my old wedding and portrait photography site here .

I've created a map that shows links to our camping/hiking/general family fun review posts that you can find here. It's pretty much the coolest thing on this site. Thanks, Google!

I great big puffy heart *love* comments, so please let me know you visited! I try to always reply!

wip: sherbet pips quilt, blocks 1-12

On Sunday I knocked out a couple more blocks and decided that it was time to see them together.  I’m a little disappointed.  I’m not really sure why–I love the blocks individually, and I really liked seeing the first half dozen together…but I was underwhelmed when I put them up on my makeshift design board.  I’m going to just keep going, though (my plan is a 4×5 grid, so 20 blocks all together).  With my dream on quilt I changed course and looking back, I’m not sure why.  I know I strongly didn’t like the mock-up at the time, but looking back I much prefer the original version to what I ended up with.  I think I suffer from Middle-of-the-Project Syndrome where it’s not looking like what you had in your head, but you’re too in it to see that it’s still pretty.  So we’ll just keep on trucking along and hopefully I’ll love it eventually.

This is one of those quilts that is going to be a nightmare to settle on a final arrangement.  In order to make it look ‘random’ a LOT of elements need to be balanced.  For example, the blocks with gray in their outer ring, the blocks with green as tiny strips versus entire outlines, the ‘pictures’ at the heart of the blocks and then of course just the overall balance and flow.  Just when you have one settled, another of the elements pops out as trouble.

Now that we’re just past the halfway point, I’m also trying to decide if I want to hack into the fat quarter stack of sherbet pips so that some of the outter rings can be pips fabric, too, instead of just the inner rings.  I’m torn because on the one hand, I like the idea of the pips not being restrained to the inner layers…but on the other hand I like the idea of really working that layer cake and keeping the fat quarter pack ‘safe’ for another project.  My hoarding tendencies are going strong!

Amanda - I think they look great, and with some sashing they will play even nicer together! Definitely keep going!

Kelly - Cut into it… 🙂 It’s ok. They’re always making more fabric.
And I’m betting you’ll love this one in the end. I think you’re right at the point where it’s hard to see the forest because of the trees. 🙂

Steph - I think with some crisp white sashing between the blocks, it will be great. Your thoughts on how to balance it are excellent. It’s going to be great!

Kristie at OCD - I have that same self doubt in the middle of pretty much every quilt. Don’t sweat it- your blocks are beautiful!! But with this style of quilt, it tends to get a bit overwhelming all together…I agree with the above suggestions of adding sashing. Each of these blocks is a little bit of art- they will pop much better if they are all framed up, Ms. Photographer 😉

Rachel - it looks SO pretty!!

aneela - Dare I say, I like it as it is! Though sashing is not a bad idea if you feel its too busy or you want to make it bigger.
This is definitely an acute case of middleoftheprojectsyndrome!!!!
Hope you continue 🙂

Jacey - I think it looks amazing so far. I love the pop of polka dots. If it were me, I’d probably hoard, too.

Jolene - Middle-of-the-Project syndrome gets me every time! Once it’s been quilted, bound, and washed, I’m sure you’ll love it. I sure do! I think a thin, light gray sashing would look good. Or, leave out the sashing, and add a bit more of a light gray solid in your future blocks, like the background where the girl is swinging on the top left corner. Whatever you do, it will look great!

Lee - This. Is. INCREDIBLE! I just love the yellow you mixed in with the Pips, the block design … all of it! Beautiful job!

But yeah, the layout thing can drive you crazy if you let it. I’ve been dealing with that on my Urban Lattice Quilt Along quilt.

Vickie - I am going to have to say that I like this just the way it is. No. I love this just the way it is. No. Wait. I wish this quilt was mine and you had a better one. Yep. That’s it. Wow. I have a charm pack of this fabric and cannot, I repeat, cannot wait till it comes out!! Love this, Traci!!!

Cara @ Me? A Mom? - Hey there, just found your blog. I think these blocks are lovely. I bet with some sashing, they will shine even more!

ashley - I think it looks wonderful, and I bet you’ll absolutely love it when it’s done! The yellowy-green in there is perfect!
