{"id":2324,"date":"2009-03-31T06:00:18","date_gmt":"2009-03-31T13:00:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/realphotography.com\/blog\/?p=2324"},"modified":"2009-03-31T06:00:18","modified_gmt":"2009-03-31T13:00:18","slug":"photography-tip-tuesday-creating-dimension-in-cake-pictures","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.needlesandapen.com\/photography\/photography-tip-tuesday-creating-dimension-in-cake-pictures\/","title":{"rendered":"photography tip tuesday&#124; creating dimension in cake pictures"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Our shoot this weekend was canceled due to some complications from the blizzard last week, so for once I have time to do our sadly neglected photography tip posts!<\/p>\n<p>As promised a few weeks ago, this tip is all about my lighting trick for cake pictures.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2327\" title=\"square wedding cake photo\" src=\"http:\/\/www.needlesandapen.com\/photography\/blog-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/cake2.jpg\" alt=\"square wedding cake photo\" width=\"582\" height=\"852\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I am a HUGE fan of cake pictures (probably because I am such a huge fan of cake), and one of the most important things in a cake picture is that it show a sense of dimension.\u00a0\u00a0 How do we show dimension in a photo?\u00a0 With shadows.\u00a0 When one side of an object is in light and the other in shadow, we can see the shape of it better.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2339\" title=\"cake\" src=\"http:\/\/www.needlesandapen.com\/photography\/blog-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/cake.jpg\" alt=\"cake\" width=\"789\" height=\"579\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If you use straight on flash, or even bounce from the wall behind your camera, you&#8217;re going to make that cake look a little flat.\u00a0 What you want with cakes is side lighting.\u00a0 Cakes are usually put in a corner of the reception room, which makes creating side lighting VERY easy.\u00a0 I just turn my flash head so that it bounces off the wall to the side of the cake.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2326\" title=\"wedding cake photo \" src=\"http:\/\/www.needlesandapen.com\/photography\/blog-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/cake1.jpg\" alt=\"wedding cake photo \" width=\"782\" height=\"568\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This lighting tip isn&#8217;t just relavent for cakes&#8211;it&#8217;s a great tip for anything that you need to show dimension for.\u00a0 You know what&#8217;s like a cake?\u00a0 A pregnant belly!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2328\" title=\"maternity portrait photographer colorado springs\" src=\"http:\/\/www.needlesandapen.com\/photography\/blog-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/belly.jpg\" alt=\"maternity portrait photographer colorado springs\" width=\"782\" height=\"568\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Totally different subject, but the same basic problem&#8211;it&#8217;s a round object but if you use lighting from head-on, you&#8217;re not going to be able to tell that it&#8217;s round.\u00a0 So you need to use side lighting, and I shot this belly in the exact way that I would a cake&#8211;bouncing light from the wall to my left.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Our shoot this weekend was canceled due to some complications from the blizzard last week, so for once I have time to do our sadly neglected photography tip posts!
